FireWire Cables

You can use more than one cable by connecting them with a Firewire repeater.

FireWire Cable Connector Types

FireWire (IEEE-1394) has two different connectors:

  • 4-pin connectors (smaller)
  • 6-pin connectors (larger)

Two additional pins are used to supply power to connected devices.

Most notebook adapter cards (PCMCIA) do not supply power. Please note that repeaters need this power supply (or an external power supply), otherwise they will not operate.

FireWire Cable Length

1394 cables are specified up to 4.5 m (15 feet).

Several companies offer cables with 10, 20 or even 50 m. As far as we know these cables will work well with DV cameras but they are limited to 200 Mbit/s or even 100 Mbit/s which is not enough for most highspeed cameras.

Firewire is able to transfer up to 400 MBit/s.
The new "1394-B" standard doubles the transfer rate but at the moment most adapters, cables etc. are configured for the older standard only.
Price range: US$ 100 for 10 m and US$ 1200 for 50 m.
